Historic Villa, Parnell – Auckland, New Zealand
The original villa was largely intact and generally in reasonable condition, although the kitchen, laundry and bathroom were deteriorated and awkwardly positioned for a twenty-first-century family life.

We proposed interior changes and designed a better flow to the main garden area. We opened up the villa’s interior and created improved sight lines, while retaining much of the original interior detailing and sense of coziness, articulating the transition from the old building to new elements.

A restrained palette of materials is employed through the house, with an emphasis on white walls and finely crafted timber wall cladding and cabinetry. Variations in flooring demarcate active and quiet zones.

Built in the 1890s, the house required a major renovation to cater for modern family living and to bring the timber villa back to its former glory. | ![]() The traditional front porch and the main entry of the villa. | ![]() A reconfiguration of casual living areas coupled with the addtion of outdoor spaces has given the house an increased sense of amenity. |

![]() Rather than simply attaching an addition to the rear of the villa, we reorganised the existing floor plan to incorporate an office and extended living areas. | ![]() The reorganised programme for this house journeys through public to semi-private to private as it steps down the sloped section. Working with the natural fall on the site we positioned the newly extended area below the kitchen and dining spaces. | ![]() The kitchen has been repositioned to create an open kitchen and dining area. Skylights provide additional daylight. |
![]() In keeping with the clients wish to create a sustainable home, many of the original materials and fixtures were incorporated into the scheme. | ![]() A small outhouse at the rear garden. A connection to the natural environment was central to the client's brief to adjust the property in a way that it responds better to its site. |
